I learnt from my last born that while a nipple shield can be a valiant last
attempt to encourage a baby to latch and feed more effectively than directly
on the breast, I think we need to keep in mind to look beyond that of every
poor latching baby as having purely a "breastfeeding problem".
Some babies have obscure and subtle physiological causes for poor latching
that could benefit from an assessment by other infant specialists like
occupational therapists, physiotherapists and speech therapists with
expertise in infant feeding.
I agree they can be a valuable tool but I have seen them used as "band-aids"
too, and sometimes close follow up with a LC might not be enough.
