Kirsten wrote, "I've looked at the ten steps and not teaching
bottlefeeding on a group basis isn't in them, but I'd love to know if that is
recommended by WHO somewhere. I'm currently working as a perinatal educator
and a reference from WHO would give me great ammunition in my fight to NOT
teach bottlefeeding in class."

The WHO publication, Evidence for the ten steps to successful breastfeeding,
WHO/CHD/98.9, states on page 23:

Step 3 "Inform all pregnant women about the benefits and management of
breastfeeding."

....Pregnant women of 32 weeks or more gestation .. should confirm that the
*benefits of breastfeeding* have been discussed with them ...[including] at
least two of the following benefits: Nutritional, protective, bonding
health benefits to the mother ... and that they have received no group
education on the use of infant formula. They should be able to describe at
least two of the following *breastfeeding management* topics: important of
rooming-in, importance of feeding on demand, how to assure enough milk and
positioning and attachment. (The Global Criteria for the WHO/UNICEF Baby
Friendly Hospital Initiative, 1992).

This should give you the ammo you want, Kirsten. I can really recommend
this publication, because it's choc-full of all the research, reviews of
studies, tables, everything you could ever need. I *love* the BFHI - the
information is absolutely crystal clear, it is not possible to fudge any of
the criteria and - best of all - it is the *mothers* who pass or fail the
hospital, since many more mothers than staff are formally assessed, at
random, and if they don't have the info, or haven't been really helped to
breastfeed, the whole hospital fails!
