Hi,

I have permission to post. I have not seen this mother as she lives abroad but the grandmother who is an RN is very concerned and has asked for help, she will be visting the baby soon. The baby was born term weighing 2.7 kg. Has been exclusively breastfed, Mom has plenty of milk but at 7 mths baby weighs 5.1 kg and has still not doubled its birth weight. Parents of the baby are both medics, the father is a Paed.

The baby breastfeeds 3hrly during the day and more often at night. They cannot get the baby to take solids, she just purses her lips, they have even tried slipping a spoon in while she is at the breast. She takes the odd bit of food from the parents plate but very little. She is well in herself, has never been ill, milestones all fine but grandmother does think she maybe hungry. This week she will go for further investigation( stool tests, cystic fibrosis etc)

My feeling is the baby maybe getting too much milk now and so is not hungry for solids. But why did she not double her birth weight when she is breastfeeding well and Mom has plenty of milk? Any tricks on getting her to take solids?

Any help or insight would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
