New Vaccine Takes Aim at Rotavirus
Shots for Infants May Cut Risk of Illness That Accounts for 500,000 Doctor
Visits Each Year

The vaccine costs about $39 a dose, but it was recently added to the federal
list of vaccines available at no cost through public health clinics.

To expand the protection against rotavirus, some pediatricians favor a
two-pronged approach: They advise mothers to breast-feed and to have their
youngsters vaccinated at the appropriate age.

"Mothers who breast-feed their infants pass on protection against rotavirus
through their milk," Pickering said.

"The vaccine starts at 2 months of age, but there is not a lot of immunity
until you've given two doses at about 4 months. If an infant can be
breast-fed during this time, you protect them while allowing time for the
rotavirus vaccine to kick in."
