Esther,
We follow the New York State Code in support of breastfeeding, written by the
NYS DOH. All hospitals in NYS are supposed to be following the guidelines set
forth. It basically supports the 10 steps to successful breastfeeding. It
does state that mothers and babies should be kept together and that
breastfeeding should be initiated as soon as possible after delivery. With
that in mind we try to initiate breastfeeding for the C/S mom as soon as
possible provided baby is stable and mom is ok. Granted many times mothers
feel miserable post C/S , but manytimes they feel just fine and there is no
need to separate the dyad.
We recently readdressed this issue because the nurse manager L&D had tried to
save time by sending the baby to the nursery right away from the OR thinking
the weigh in, bath etc. could be done while mom was being sutured up in OR.
We found that the babies were never getting back to the RR because staff
never pursued it once the baby was over in the nsy. One less thing to have to
do! I braught it up at a departmental mtg of managers and we nipped that in
the bud quickly and went back to keeping baby mom and dad together in RR .
