Melisa wonders about the possible hazards of being squirted in the eye by
breastmilk.

I always teach manual expression of breastmilk, and I *have* been squirted
in the eye, at least twice that I can remember. Last year, when I was very
ill, my doctor was *most* interested to hear about this, and sent me for an
HIV test.

Being squirted is an occupational hazard for LCs and others working with
breastfeeding mothers. I've never seen any warning in our literature about
this, but now I make sure I stand or sit to the *side* when I'm teaching
hand expression. It's not nice knowing that you have someone's breastmilk
in your eyes and you don't know that person's viral history, and the history
of all the partners they may have had .....

As to using donated milk? I *always* caution mothers about this in the
above terms, even sisters planning to nurse each other's babies. But if
donated EBM were to be brought to the boil, just so that bubbles appear
around the edge of the pan, this will inactivate the virus. I have also
wondered about the possibilities of mothers selling their milk for
commercial distribution, thinking this would be a wonderful income-earner
(especially foreign exchange?) for the millions of poverty-stricken mothers
in Africa who have so much milk and so little else. And since pasteurization
renders breastmilk "safe", screening donors is really superflouous.
