I sometimes use this, or the comparison with the man who flops down
in front of the TV and opens a can of beer or pop (trans:
soda)...would his partner swoop in and whisk the beer or pop away
from him saying she knows he doesn't need it because he probably had
a cup of coffee at work? (Well, I suppose some might ; ) ) Or I ask
them, if a toddler or child *with language* comes to them and asks
for/offers a cuddle, would they say 'no, we had a cuddle 2 hours
ago'...so what about the baby, who has no language, but asks
for/offers love, food and comfort in his own way?

In fact, it's not quite the same, because the toddler who asks for
something (whatever it is) at a time that's not convenient can
understand about pleasures deferred, and gratification of need
delayed. A baby can't.
