I refuse to call it formula…….it is artificial milk. Even our Ministry
of Health calls it Infant food powder.
When I meet the salespeople, either at events, where I almost always end
up sitting next to them, or when they have babies and end up in my
breastfeeding room, my main line is " Breastfeeding is not your
business!!" You should be teaching mothers how to sterilize, prepare,
and give bottles safely to the poor little babies who are not breastfed.
You should be talking about E Sakazakii bacteria which is endemic in
artificial milk powder and requires that the artificial milk be prepared
very carefully to avoid meningitis in the infants drinking it, and you
should explain that it is the protein in cow's milk and not the lactose
which causes stomach distress in newborns, instead of pushing
lactose-free artificial milk powder. ( Every time I use the word
artificial, it makes them flinch.)
Of course, I often get into trouble is I say these things near
prospective customers, and have already been put on probation in the
hospital for telling the truth. I am trying to control the impulse to
tell the truth, but for some reason, things always spill out.
This company sent a list of complaints about me to the head of the
hospital. The main issue: I am hurting their sales.
Long stories. I don't know who is reading Lactnet these days. I will
be at the conference in Chicago if anyone wants to hear how I have
gotten into so much trouble this past year.
