<<On occasion I have seen a tiny clear flap of skin over a nipple plug. The
pump or baby opens the flap, then it reseals and the plug returns. Sounds
gross>>> but have mom scratch or gently pull the piece off completely.
Afterward I have them use epsom salt soaks 3 times a day for 2 or 3 days to
promote healing and prevent infection. The plugs do not recurr.
<<With all the talk about epidurals I would like to know if any one else has
seen generalized areolar edema in mothers who had epiduarals (We see it in
CS's and long hospitalized labors too). There's been a lot of discussion here
about what it is and how to treat it. The areola is so firm it forms a ball
so baby can't latch on and pumping leaves deep indentations in the areola.
Milk won't *flow* either. Our docs will not start an epidural until mom has
had at least 2 liters of IV fluid. We think we are seeing a generalized edema
from fluid overload that isn't severe enough to cause the usual pitting
elsewhere. Has anyone else seen this? Any ideas?
