Aloha Jean,

If this mom is a recent immigrant, she is probably under the impression that
formula is better than breastmilk. She may want to do things the western
way--meaning bottles. Also, many Vietnamese believe that the colostum is not
good and they don't feed it to the baby----so what the nurse said about her
milk could be reinforcing this. They also see the medical establishment as
having much authority and therefore will pay much respect to what is said.

Cynthia had good ideas, but I am not sure if they will work in this
situation. I would show the mom real, healthy, fat breastfed babies---yes
fat. My mother in law who is Vietnamese and breastfed all her 8 children
thought formula was best for a time. By the birth of my son, she started to
think better of breastmilk. My son was a real sumo. People always commented
on his size. My favorite was "look at those hamhocks!" Whenever my mother
in law was with me, she always respond (with a big smile on her face) it's
mother's milk.

Also just explain the health benefits to baby and mom simply.

I think that would do it.

Aloha,
Gloria Thai No longer in Hawai'i, but on the Gulf Coast
