Are children in our culture basicly different from those in other cultures? I
would not think so. Children in this age do not differ much in time or
geographical areas.
What differs is the parenting. Severe, consistent crying is not biologically
of physically normal for a newborn human being (it might be "normal" in the
sense of occurring often, like for example otitis media seems to be normal).
It is antiproductive in terms of survial to be like that.
A crying infant is communicating a need and it is up to the parent to find
out what that need is and to see it met.
As a mother of 5 I know very well how challinging that can be and, yes, I can
understand the need for anything that will comfort the child for a while
(especially if the alternative for a near to burned out parent is to shake
the baby or otherwise harm him). Sometimes it can be very difficult to find
the reason for persistent crying, but I would strongly encourage any
caretaker or health care professional to educate parents that ongoing crying
is not normal and is always a sigh of something that iswrong and thatshould
be taken care of.

Warmly greeting,
