Actually, I couldn't find the originating statement for this thread, but I
just had to chime in. I'm not Roman Catholic, but my understanding of the
RC Church's stance on breastfeeding is that their policy is very overtly
pro-breastfeeding. The recently deceased Pope wrote and spoke in very
pro-breastfeeding ways, and breastfeeding as natural child-spacing is
permitted under "natural family planning". I've never heard a Protestant
minister or lay official who was actually informed on the topic speak in any
other way than positively toward breastfeeding (like medical professionals
or anyone else, they have differing levels of knowledge on the subject and,
more to the point, their own experiences play a part in the advice and
counsel they give). IMHO, I don't know how one could really take seriously
the premises of Christianity--including that people are created in the image
of God, and therefore that the human person is of great worth and the human
body has meaning and integrity in its' form and function--and not be at
least in theory be pro-breastfeeding. What better example of the human body
doing what it was intended to do in the service of others! There is no
better example of self-giving love than a breastfeeding mother. I could go
on and on about this. Sure, there are people who may say differently, but
they no more speak for the whole of the faith than do those medical
professionals who give bad medical advice speak for all medical
professionals.

My two theologically informed cents,

Anisa
