Regina, I loved this.    I usually make a similar comparison to salivary
glands.   If you eat more, your salivary glands will make more saliva.   If
you happen to think about food your salivary glands may "let down" saliva
even before you need it, because the system is designed to make SURE you have
enough saliva for your eating needs. And above all, you never have to wait to
eat until your salivary glands have filled up enough.   Etc.

I didn't make this one up either, I don't think, but I alas can't remember
who originally suggested it to me.
