Roni: It seems that the report has misrepresented the results. If I read
the abstract of the research correctly, it showed that women who had their
first pregnancy before age 20 did not have a different rate of breast
cancer, but that those who breastfed before age 20 appeared to have a
*lower* rate of breast cancer. An odds ratio less than 1.0 means a
decreased risk, so 0.6 suggests lower risk of breast cancer (how
significant the odds ratio is depends on the confidence intervals, which
are not reported here -- usually, odds ratios are reported as 0.6 (CI
0.3-0.78) or some such numbers, i.e. the range of decreased risk was
between 0.3 and 0.78; if the range crosses the number 1.0 (e.g. 0.6 (CI
0.4-1.2), then the risk reduction may not be significant. Still, whether
this is a significant risk reduction or not, it certainly is quite the
opposite from suggesting an *increased risk*, for heaven's sake.

Thanks for alerting us to the report. It's time to go to the journal
itself for the data, and if the article confirms the way I'm reading this,
it's time to contact intelihealth and ask them to print a correction to
their statement. Regards, Alicia Dermer, MD, IBCLC.
