permission to post. If anyone can help me understand if it is possible to
culture Beta strep from breastmilk? I have not heard of moms passing on
group beta strep to their newborns, via breast, but here is the time line of
events... If anyone can shed some light on this i would be most appreciative
as mom is pregnant and was told not to breastfeed this baby. Please feel free
to contact me off list.

6-2-06: Day of Birth: Delivered vaginally following premature rupture of
membranes on 6-1-06. Mother treated with ampicillin 3 doses prior to
delivery. Infant evaluated for infection and treated with ampicillin and
getamicin. Initial blood count not suggestive of infection.

6-3-06: Remained on antibiotics

6-4-06: blood culture proved negative therefore antibiotics stopped. Started
on phototherapy for jaundice.

6-5-06: More jaundiced dispite phototherapy so triple phototherapy
instituted. Small feedings of Breast milk started.

6-6-06: Jaundice improved

6-12-06: Biliblanket stopped

6-13-06: Developed abdominal distention, poor perfusion and apnea, placed
on ventilator, IV fluids and dopamine for blood pressure. CBC abnormal with
low white blood cell count. started on ampicillin and gentamicin and when
blood culture from morning showed bacteria growing placed on vancomycin as
well. hematocrit low, given blood transfusion.

6-14-06: Blood culture from initial positive blood culture indentified as group B
Strep.

6-16-06: Breast milk cultured and despite being on antibiotics for 7 days at
home and 2 days in hospital for mastitis, proved positive for Group B Strep
