To comment on an issue that was mentioned in the thread on "positioning" in
the last few days:

Over the years, various techniques that already existed have later been
named or branded. Besides techniques and strategies for positioning, there
are other examples. One is "dancer's hand" technique. I was shown this
technique when I had my first baby, in Queensland, in 1965. Later, a mother
I interviewed for an historical study of infant feeding advice mentioned
having been shown a similar technique in the early-1940s, also in
Queensland. The term "dancer's hand" was coined in the 1980s and the
technique was considered new! It wasn't - only the name was new.

I'm sure most ways of doing things that have worked are not new. They just
go out of favour, or are temporarily forgotten in some locations, while
surviving in others. Can you think of others?

Regards,
Virginia

In Brisbane, Queensland, Australia,
where it was 32 degrees C today. Summer is here.
