I have permission from this mother to post. She delivered a 24 week premie
almost 3 months ago due to pregnancy induced hypertension. She was on Labetelol
until about 6 weeks ago. She has maintained an adequate milk supply through
pumping until about a month ago when she started on a birth control pill. We
talked about this when she came to me because her milk supply had started to
drop. She stopped the pill about 3 weeks ago but her milk supply did not return to
pre pill levels. Last week, she was feeling "funny" and had her blood
pressure taken. It was dangerously high which landed her in the ER and her doctor
started her back on Labetelol. Within 2 days, her milk supply went from about
15ml/pumping to at least 90 ml/pumping. She asked me if I had ever heard of this
happening. I told her I had not but, with her permission, I would post and
see if anyone else has experienced this in their practice.

Thanks,
Chris Smith, RN, IBCLC, RLC
