Hi lactnetters,

I have a mom who has a UTI (urinary tract infection) and pyridium has been
prescribed along with an antibiotic. I looked up pyridium in Dr. Hale's
book, it states "This product, due to limited efficacy, should probably not
be used in lactating women although it is doubtful that it would be harmful
to an infant."

Does anyone have any references that would support the use of the drug? Or
an alternative drug that would be compatible with breastfeeding? The
pediatrician will not let the mom continue to nurse unless I can show him the
safety of the drug. The mom doesn't want to give formula, and she doesn't
have any expressed milk stored.

The infant is a healthy, 4 month old, and has double her birthweight. The
pyridium has been prescribed for 3 days 3 times a day.

TIA,
Pam Wells, RNC, IBCLC in St. Louis
