Speaking from solely personal experience~

When Dryden was born one of the nurses came in and tried to 'force' his
mouth open. He wouldn't latch on because he was born sleepy (I had a
very long, and very medicated induction), and she kept telling me how he
'needed' to eat. I swear, if I hadn't been limp from exhaustion I would
have punched her out. LOL I don't know what exactly she was trying to
accomplish, since the pressure she put on his jaw just upset him, and
made him clamp his mouth down even tighter. She stuck her finger in his
mouth and PULLED down on his little jaw. :( I felt (and still do) really
guiltly about allowing her to do this, but at the time I really didn't
know to NOT let her.

I think that with my next child(ren) I wouldn't go for that approach.
You guys are the pro's, though.. I'm sure you know more about this than
I do. =-)
