If he's having a sweat test, that's for cystic fibrosis. I've seen a
baby with that condition, she had edema and low weight gain, classic
signs of protein deficiency. Unfortunately, the gi doc misdiagnosed her
with protein losing enteropathy and bullied mom into stopping
breastfeding. When she failed to thrive on the artificial stuff, the
baby was finally correctly diagnosed by another doctor, but by then
mom's milk production was shot. It was very sad, because that baby never
had an infection until she was weaned, and was always sick afterward. A
little pancreatic enzyme and a little more human milk to help her catch
up would have made the difference.
