If you are going to interact with the medical community and be respected for your skills, it would be good to speak the same language.
Even in your home or the client's home, universal precautions apply.  You won't want to transmit any illness to the baby or mother or from your clients to yourself.
Occupational safety protects YOU.
EVERYONE should know CPR.
