Hi Teresa,

You might look at the LLL conferences or ILCA conferences for some ideas and specific guidelines. At the very least I would suggest:
1) some mention in the registration materials asking if the attendee plans to bring an infant/toddler and then link to or follow up with a description of the facilities and the arrangements that have been made to accommodate them, as well as suggestions for discreet nursing in a professional setting
2) making those arrangements with the facility so that there is a quiet space reserved for these parents, changing space in the rest rooms, and refrigerator available in the hotel (assuming this is more than a one day conference) for the mother to store any expressed milk for baby if the baby is to be in the room with a caregiver while mother attends sessions.
3) a disclaimer in the program booklet alerting attendees that there may be infants/small children present and asking those parents to be considerate of the others and step out if their child becomes distracting.

Hope this helps,

Subject: guidelines for conferences

A friend of mine is involved with organizing an academic conference (non-breastfeeding) and wants to know if there are any guidelines, policies, strategies out there used by people organizing such events to make them breastfeeding-friendly, both for parents who bring their babies to the conference and those who have babies at home but want to pump and store milk. Does anyone know of anything like that? Or do you have some suggestions about what their policies could include?
