Hi Kika
You are in a spot. It sounds not unlike the dilemma of speaking at
conferences sponsored by Code Breachers. I would suggest a nice, polite,
calm (you may need a massage and some camomile tea before you go in to see
your editor) conversation about the importance of the Code. Take a copy of
your IBCLC Code of Ethics and point out that you are now in a very difficult
position - and that you fear discipline from your accrediting body. Explain
that advertising is known to set the agenda for consumer mums regarding what
they need to buy for babies. Explain that breastfeeding must be protected
as well as promoted and supported; protected from those who would profit
from reinforcing the assumption that babies need bottles. If s/he seems
concerned and is willing to flick the Code Breachers, then by all means stay
on. (Bear in mind there might be an advertising lag or an issue or three.)
Perhaps your next column could mention the misleading tactics of advertisers
... and that your presence in this magazine. But if the problem is not
resolved within a specified period, let your ed know that it will be
difficult for her to find a replacement for you.
In the meantime, have a look at the statement from an Australian arm of the
EMAP publishing house that has become conde compliant:

I am sure this link will start a whole other conversation but it is worth a
look.
