Dear Lactnet Friends:

As with all things, with increased knowledge and techniques, and individual
practitioner variation, the borders between disciplines can be fuzzy.

Operationally, CST is a scientific approach to the laying on of hands.
Touch is light, no heavier than 5 grams. Chakras and meridians are
involved, and the practitioner may engage in therapeutic dialogue with the
patient.

There are at least 6 different kinds of chiropractic, which may use touch
heavier than 5 grams, and works more on physical corrections of alignment.

The American Chiropractic Association has this definition:

"Chiropractic is a health care profession that focuses on disorders of the
musculoskeletal system and the nervous system, and the effects of these
disorders on general health. Chiropractic care is used most often to treat
neuromusculoskeletal complaints, including but not limited to back pain,
neck pain, pain in the joints of the arms or legs, and headaches.

Doctors of Chiropractic - often referred to as chiropractors or
chiropractic physicians - practice a drug-free, hands-on approach to health
care that includes patient examination, diagnosis and treatment.
Chiropractors have broad diagnostic skills and are also trained to
recommend therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises, as well as to provide
nutritional, dietary and lifestyle counseling."

The Upledger site is not working now. Here's a definition of CST from
another source:

"Craniosacral therapy (CST), or cranial-sacral therapy, is a form of
bodywork or alternative therapy focused primarily on the concept of
"primary respiration" and regulating the flow of cerebrospinal fluid by
using therapeutic touch to manipulate the synarthrodial joints of the
cranium. To do this, a practitioner will apply light touches to a patient's
skull, face, spine and pelvis."

warmly,
