I have to say that I agree wholeheartedly with Mary. This mother's privacy
is being breached. The grandmother's attitude is disturbing, to say the
least.
It's been said on this list before, but is apparently worth saying again.
The negative attitude towards drinking alcohol while breastfeeding is
culturally based & creates an obstacle.
A quick online search seems to show that death often occurs as a result of a
blood alcohol level of 0.4. This translates to 40ml of alcohol in 1000ml of
blood. Milk is synthesised from blood; the alcohol content of milk would be
the same. A mother would be dead before the alcohol content of her milk
would harm her baby.
When I am discussing this issue with families, I always point out that when
drinking, the breastmilk is never a concern. What is of concern is who is
caring for the baby? Any mother too drunk too breastfeed is also too drunk
to safely care for a baby, prepare ABM, etc.
