Lately, I have had several moms with sudden need for a pump (unexpected
preemie delivery for example.) I practice in a small town, and have
patients who come from quite a distance to me, since there are many small
farming communities around here with no physicians. There are 2 rental
stations within reasonable driving distance here. I have contacted both of
them to find out what services they offer. 1 is in a small town pharmacy.
There is absolutely no lactation support at all, and the clerks were
spectacularly uninformed. I spoke to 3 people before someone could
accurately give me the name of the pump they rent. The other rental station
is in a competing hospital about 25 miles from my hospital. They do have a
lactation consultant, but generally rely on the L&D nurses to dispense
pumps. When I called, the nurse I spoke too also didn't know even the name
of the pumps they rent. In the end, I sent the most recent mom who needed a
pump to the other hospital, but assured her I could help her with it if needed.
What I'm wondering is how complicated is it to rent pumps myself? I would
not need to make a profit at this, and don't appreciate a huge need, but
finding an appropriate pump for 2 recent patients has been difficult enough
to make me think having one to offer myself would have been lots easier.
Those of you who offer pump rental, could you give me some idea of how much
of an undertaking is involved?
