Seriously, since when has 5% weight loss been considered a "serious risk of developing a problem"? It is not. Supplementing babies with a 5% weight loss is inexcusable and there are plenty of ways to provide parents with evidence based solutions, many of which involve stopping the baby unfriendly practices that exist in 95% of the hospitals in the United States. It is because of those practices that most parents think they need to use some formula and this abysmal study is only going to cause more unnecessary supplementation of infants at 5% weight loss instead of 10%.

Sincerely,

Susan E. Burger, MHS, PhD, IBCLC
