when my daughter was 11 mos (2 yrs now) i went through a spell of
eating reese's peanut butter cups daily. i was also eating peanut
butter, banana and honey sandwiches several times a wk. she began to
have episodes of vomiting in her sleep. she would also have bouts of
extreme fussiness and crying and want to nurse constantly. she would
nurse, fall asleep and vomit. i made an appt to see the ped but before
we even went the mystery was solved. one of her older brothers shared
some of his pb&j and she had an immediate and terrifying anaphylactic
reaction. we have no family history of food allergies on either side
so i'd not felt a need to be cautious w/ eating it myself past her
infancy.

when i asked the specialist if peanut proteins in my milk had been the
likely cause of her vomiting and discomfort, he said absolutely. you
can let your mom know there is a fabulous substitute out there called
sunbutter, brand name is also sunbutter. made from sunflower seeds, it
tastes exactly like peanut butter! even our mainstream grocery stores
have begun carrying it. she can also find it online if she can't find
it locally should she decide to eliminate peanut butter and want to
satisfy the cravings. other alternative nut butters are not
recommended if there is peanut allergy. i have some great sites for
dealing w/ food allergies and diet - feel free to e me offlist if
you'd like them ! and i have no financial stake or interest in
sunbutter, tho i should invest given how much my 4 voracious children
tuck away !
