My apologies if this is a subject that has been discussed before. I am having
a difficult time searching the data base.
I have a client who has been a paraplegic for 15 years. Her injury is at the
T4 level. She relates that she loses sensation at her nipple line. With her
first baby she noted a decreased milk supply at one month. The same is
happening with her second baby. She is pumping after feeds and is starting to
use an SNS. The baby's suck and latch on are within normal limits. She has
discussed the issue of paraplegic women and low milk supply with her doctors
and other lactation consultants. It would seem logical that if she has
decreased sensation at the nipple line that this may effect her milk supply
due to decreased tactile stimulation. However, what this client would like is
scientific and anecdotal information about this issue. If you know of research
articles or have experience with other clients with a similar situation,
pleased post.
Thank you,
Georgia Therrien
