I'm looking for advice/suggestions for a mom who has battled a ductal
yeast infection for several months. Started out as continued sore
nipples when baby was 5 weeks. The OB was unwilling to prescribe
Fluconazole. Tried OTC products. Had a recurrence of sore
nipples/burning pain and exquisite tenderness around areola on Left. To
make long story short ended up seeing a Breast Surgeon (baby at 5
months) who prescribed the Fluconazole after she had bleeding from the
nipple. Ultrasound of the breast was neg. for any abscesses or
masses. After total of 21 days of Fluconazole 200mg/daily (with
complete resolution of symptoms) has recurrence of pain in 1 breast.
Struggling to help her breastfeed comfortably. She most recently has
seen an infectious disease MD who suggested stopping nursing and didn't
think further Fluconazole would be beneficial. Culture of milk did not
grow out anything. Mom does not want to discontinue breastfeeding. Has
anyone else ever seen a case like this? Any suggestions?

Thanks so much for any input.
