Aloha,

I have permission from mom to post. I could use your opinions.

Mom has had most of pituitary removed. Taking Cortef for pituitary. She is
also on hormone replacement as her thyroid is low. Mom nursed first child
for 4 months. Stopped due to work. Breastfeeding went fine. Her
endocrinologist said that the remaining part of her pituitary is where the
prolactin was produced, so that' s why breastfeeding went well.

Second child is 3 weeks old. 6 lbs 14 oz at birth, 6 lbs 9 0z at discharge
and 7 lbs 8 oz at two weeks. mom is concerned about milk production. Baby
has not had bm for 4 days. Nurse told her to give corn syrup with milk for
constipation. Mom could not pump much milk with Lactina.

Baby nurses about every 2 hours. First 5 minutes at each breast is
aggressive--mom sees and hears sucking and swallowing. After that baby
breaks latch, roots and seems to play, nurse some. Baby has been wetting 5-8
wets a day. She's been supplementing with abm--2 oz every day.

I think baby is getting enough and then "snacking" each feed. Lack of
bm's--due to age? Breastfed babies tend to go longer bewtween bm's at about
4-6 weeks. Baby gaining---filling out---not really fussy. Baby wants to be
held "all the time" which also makes mom think baby not getting enough.
Maybe some nipple confusion?

Suggested mom cut back on supplementing-- going to 2 oz every other day. See
doctor--for weight check to put her at ease. Her prolactin levels were
checked post partum and were fine. Do not give corn syrup.

Any other suggestions? even though mom nursed the first for 4 months, is it
possible to have a supply problem with this one?

Aloha,
