Alice writes about a 6 day old with problems feeding from any
"container". A variety have been tried with little difference in baby's
response, so Haberman might not be any better, but certainly worth the
attempt. Yes, tongue-tie could be the primary source. It's a shame we
have to send parents to an EMT for such a simple process. If this
requires an EMT,. then circs should only be done by a urologist!

Other possibilities - is baby still feeling the effects of vacuum
delivery? Many times this can impact suckling, especially in the first
couple days or so. Most seem to resolve, but there could be a headache
as baby tries to feed (any whimpering by babe when trying to feed?). If
there must be a vacuum bruise, it's less of a problem if it's off to one
side of the head so mom can position baby with that side of its head
facing upward-seems to reduce the discomfort. Liquid tylenol (with
ped's OK) shortly before nursing might help if this is the problem.
Baby may be reluctant to feed if the first ones were associated with
pain. Things may not be completely "lined up" even now-possibly CST
would help.

In using the shield, is it being turned nearly inside out before
applying? This brings more nipple/areolar tissue into the shield right
away when the shield is spread out over the breast and the "teat"
portion pops back to its normal position. Is baby's mouth at least all
the way to the base of the "teat" part of the shield? Baby held close
enough that cheeks touch the breast?

Lots and lots of skin-to-skin snuggling while all this is being tried is
soooo important. Sometimes that alone helps baby to "regroup" and go to
breast-sometimes with no further effort on mom's part.

Good luck,
Winnie
