There have been many, many times lately that I have wanted to jump in on
some recent post, but ya'll are just too fast! The recent posts on
hypoglycemia intrigues me. Forgive me if I sound very naive, I am trying to
understand...

Hospitals have protocols and policies that state what to do in a
particular situation. In this case, testing babies for hypoglycemia and if
they "fail the test" they receive ABM. But what prevents a mother from just
saying "No." Isn't it a parent's right to refuse treatment they find
unacceptable? Isn't it a parent's right to question "protocol" and demand
that their individual needs be accessed outside the "norm?" There have been
protocols that I, and many women I know, have refused to accept while in
the hospital. My former co-Leader even signed herself out AMA after her last
birth(which was in the van on the side of the road-why she went to the
hospital afterward is something she regrets) because she did not agree with
the protocol for a situation she faced. So, again, what prevents a mother
from saying "No!"

When I look back at the birth of my 4 LGA (10+lbs) babies and remember
being told that they would be tested for hypoglycemia and even told that "if
the level is low, we'll have to feed him." And my reaction, in my head, was
"no, you won't." We never had to deal with artifically feeding our babies
anything as the glucose levels were always fine but still. Why must parents
be "scared" into doing things to their breastfed babies, such as given ABM
when it goes against their very fiber? It's a frightening situation to think
that as I approach the birth of our newest baby(who is likely to follow suit
and be 10+lbs.), living in a new state, being attended by a new doctor that
my rights-and others- as a parent are being stripped away.

Every baby deserves to be exclusively breastfed and parents have the right
to choose to do so. What gives the HCP's the "right" to override what we
determine is best for OUR babies??
