I have heard a version of this but it goes more like this: Formula companies WANT women to TRY to breastfeed, because, statistically, mothers who at least TRY to breastfeed are more educated and more concerned about their baby's health on some level and will make every effort to buy what they think is the "best" for their babies. Therefore, when they "fail", they are more likely to buy formula for a longer time than mothers who choose to formula-feed from the very beginning.

(In response to Susan Johnson's post 11 Mar 2013 regarding formula companies logic.)

A formula sales person once told me that formula companies want breastfeeding mothers to fail because they know those moms will use formula longer than a mom who started out formula feeding.
Sadly, the dollar rules.
