<I do not have the references, but, Esther maybe you
could track down these researches and then you have something that you
could show in your hospital.Maybe they would be less pushy about the
bathing if they see bathing isn't always such a good thing.>

I will do a search tonight.
Do you really think I can accomplish this in this lifetime, Annelies ?
It took me a whole year and a half to convince the staff that until
newborn infants learn to tell time, breastfeeding hours ( i.e. 5:30,
9:30, 13:00, 17:30, and 21:30) have been temporarily abolished, and they
are allowed unrestricted breastfeeding, after 50 years of scheduled
feeds, And moms can keep the babies with them 24 hours a day if they
want. There are still nurses who give me dirty looks when I come in in
the morning, but they all want Gail's cute little bf pin so they are
trying to be breastfeeding friendly. We have come a long way ..
OK, so now I need a new challenge, you think? Abolish baths? Yeah
right!! I mentioned it to the nurse in the reception area this morning
where new babies are collected from L&D and prepared for extrauterine
life..We have had very little rain here in Israel this year and it has
officially been declared a year of drought, so I half-jokingly suggested
that to save water we should skip washing the babies!! ( The real
rationale behind the no-bath just wouldn't cut it here, but I will try.)
There are still some people in shock that I suggest that mothers not
shower right after delivery in order to retain the scent of amniotic
fluid.
I read her mind....she was contemplating leading me off to the
psychiatric ward, but instead unwrapped one baby and asked me what the
mom would think if she got her baby like this. I wonder if the mom had
complained in the delivery room that her baby was not sparkly clean.
Now I have to admit, the kid was kind of a mess. And let me tell you
that a soft wet warm cloth diaper I gently applied did not have any
effect on that blob of goo on the baby's head.
Heather, HELP!! What happens to those globs of blood that collect in
English babies with thick hair?
This nurse knows my sense of humour and said that she would tell the
moms that Esther has a new natural system. Moms have to lick their
babies clean like mommy cats do......(hmmmm, actually.......). And she
said that I would probably say that the AAP and WHO recommend it!!
Meanwhile babies are still getting rinsed and buffed, and for once in my
life I didn't have an answer to those globs. Any suggestions??? Come on
guys, you got me into this one!!
Esther Grunis, IBCLC, trying to fight the Formula Friendly Hospital
Initiative.
I just noticed that the expirey date on all the little bottles of
Simiyuck that we have is July 1. I am going to keep quiet until the
2nd and then dump all the stuff in a joyous celebration!!!
