Hi, Renee and Others: We also receive free samples on what seems like a
daily basis. I got 300 samples of breast pads from Avent just in time for
WBW and have been handing them out to moms along with Medela's magnet
during morning rounds at the hospital. I personally think that we are
potentially creating problems by doing so (but it's difficult to fight the
mentality that people are "entitled to" and "must have" the freebies) when
I hear from moms that they laid in a year's supply of Lansinoh (or Purelan -
pick your favorite) because that's how long they're planning on nursing.
Or the increasing number of mothers who I'm seeing with mastitis
(especially < 4 weeks PP) because the pump companies advertise so well that
mothers nowadays are convinced they absolutely will not be successful with
nursing unless they begin pumping in the hospital with the $300 pump they
bought on the way into the hospital. The "best" reason I've heard so far
when I questioned mom why she was pumping when her baby was obviously doing
so well with nursing at 3 weeks was: "My girlfriend told me to." And, of
course, if this much milk is good, more must be better. The American
mantra about anything in life, sigh.
I guess I've adopted the approach of what is the lesser of 2 evils - the
formula discharge bag or a pair of breast pads and refrigerator magnet?
Gee, they still get the discharge bag, though.
