Hi Laura,

Protein sensitivity is not very clear to me, sounds like a phrase made
up by the formula industry. Who says the infant is not reacting to
something in the Alimentum? I can understand that the mother is
eliminating major allergens, but why lower her protein intake ? Would
that lower the protein content of her milk? This reminds me of mothers
being told to eliminate lactose from their diet, when their infant is
said to be lactose intolerant. Of course we all know that lactose is
made in the breast, not derived from the mothers diet.

Has the infant been examined for other possible causes for the bloody
stools?

Maybe the following publication in Pedaitrics will help her.

Lactose Intolerance in Infants, Children, and Adolescents
Pediatrics, Sep 2006; 118: 1279 - 1286.

The authors state:

"Breastfed infants should be continued on human milk in all cases."

With kind regards,

I have a friend (who just finished med school at Yale) who has a 3 month old with major protein sensitivity. He is still having frank blood in stools with BF even though she has drastically modified her diet (cut out all major allergens & is eating little protein). The baby is gaining weight, generally happy and doesn't have any other food allergy symptoms. Their ped & GI specialist are pushing them hard to completely quit breastfeeding. They are now primarily feeding Alimentum & bf only 1-2x/day. She's pumping and would like to continue BF but can't get over the popular medical opinion that she shouldn't. She's an MD so she's asked me for RESEARCH articles or other credible resources that will tell her that the benefits of breastfeeding outweigh the constant GI irritation that her baby is experiencing with BF.
