In the US, the "baby bath" is to protect the staff from any nasty germs on
the baby, such as HIV.  Until they are bathed they are "dirty" and staff has
to wear gloves to protect themselves.

At the Univ of MI hospital the baby bath used to be done at the time parents
chose, in their room, so they could watch or assist.  I don't know what the
current practrice is.
