Jean and all
Just want to say that I have had much success lately trying your "pushing
back the edema" therapy on swollen areolae. When I cannot express milk in
first day in hospital using the Marmet technique, I try your technique and
it often works better to get colostrum coming out.
Then I had a very engorged mom whose baby couldn't latch come into my office
on day 5, and I first pushed back on the areola around the nipple and the
milk just came out and out. Then we were able to pump very easily with the
Medela manual pump, which she had just got from the WIC program, to get
about an ounce out. Then I hooked up the Classic pump w/ double setup and
got another 2 oz out. The baby latched and nursed to satiety - to the
mother's great joy - and the mother felt soooo good - to her great relief.
I think if I would have tried regular hand expression and/or pumping before
the pressing, I would have been less successful. Lactnuts, if you want to
try this, go back to archives and search Cotterman, edema, areola - I would
think this would give you the hits you need.
