Thanks Kathleen, I will look up Hale's references and send it on to this
Pedi.
It is also true that as a nonphysician I feel my knowledge in lactation is
still not trusted or respected by most physicians. I am trying hard to walk
that delicate line between informing the parents and the clinicians but not
making it look like the clinicians are incorrect in their information.
In this particular case I have had to deal with two different clinicians
trying to help this mother. She is observing their resistance to my
recommnedations and I am handing out literature to back my plan and they are
just spewing their credentials. This poor mother had the saddest look when
she told me her Pedi was adamant that she could not breastfeed her baby while
using the APNO. Part of me just wanted to say "do it anyway, how will the
Pedi even know" but I know I can't do that so instead I told her I would take
the pressure to inform the clinician.
I don't know if we can ever change this mind set but I am not giving up my
work as an LC.
Off the soap box.
