Hi all,

I need some tricks to get an infant to open wide.

I have a mom who is a chiropractor- very motivated to breastfeed
NSVD no instrumentation OR EPIDURAL! but + pit. and IVF pushed for 1.5 hrs and
medial episiotomy! infant 9# 2oz BF right away but then in nursery had low gluc
and you bet the RN's gave formula! as per the protocol- she got 5 supplements
1/4, 1/2 to 1 oz in the first 24 hours! no pacifier
moms nipples are somewhat flat but I'm trying to help her do a sandwhich
technique and kind of rolling it in
problem is we can't get infant to open wide- she does have a somewhat recessed
chin and sucks on her lower lip- she goes right from sleep to crying in 0-30
sec! I thought that maybe she was suctioned aggressively in the DR but RN says
no. When I first examined her after her first supplement at a few hours of
life- she already had her tongue back in her mouth
I helped the mom get her on and she showed good swallowing mom didn't feel pain-
YET!
I'm so worried that there's going to be nipple damage here

What can we do to get infant to open wide?
We keep trying to calm baby first, express some colostrum, tickle nose with
nipple, mouth with underside of breast
