I have also had good luck with very LIMITED pumping in cases where the mother is so engorged that the baby is having difficulty latching and the mom is very uncomfortable.  I tell the mom to to empty as much as they can once and then try to keep ahead of the engorgement with frequent feedings.  Most mother never need to pump again.  A few pump one or two more times and then go on to nurse without problems.
