Rita Madden asks for suggestions for a mother whose 7 month old baby has
begun waking at night 'to graze'. In the past month he has had a cold and
started taking some solids, after being exclusively breastfed for 6 months.
From Rita's post: "The only change was starting a new day care 3 weeks ago."
My money is on the change of day care, the illness and the starting solids.
Both those things are big changes. He was exclusively breastfed - was his
mother mainly at home with him or has he been in some other kind of day
care? Chances are he is seeing a bit less of her during the day now, and so
he's making up for it by spending time in her company at night. Or, he
noticed that her milk supply needed a boost since they are apart for more of
the day, and is accepting the mission willingly?
If he has always been a predictable, regular sort of kid he'll get back
there when things settle in the new routine. Unless she is very eager to
speed up the weaning process I wouldn't push for him to be getting even more
solids. He's grazing, not seeming hungry - just checking in, you know? So
why meet that need for contact, with vegetables?
