How would you suggest weaning for a mother who suffers from recurrent
mastitis (15+ times in 2.5 years) due to oversupply issues?

It's a vicious circle - the mother tries to cut back gradually on
nursing, she gets mastitis, so she nurses more on the affected side,
her supply goes up, she tries to cut back again, she gets mastitis,
etc.

Her physician refuses to prescribe antibiotics as a prophylactic
stating that she will just create resistence bugs in her body and will
end up sicker than she started. Her physician also stated that since
the nursling is over a year old, she needs to just stop nursing.
Weaning cold turkey isn't an option - the mother wants to wean
gradually as she and her child are both not ready to give up the
nursing relationship. I also worry that sudden weaning would make her
extremely sick - either with an infection requiring hospitalization or
an abscess.

What other options are there?
