Currently, nutrition is considered part of the daily room rate for hospitalized patients. That includes diet trays, formulae, and human milk. Special medical nutrition therapy such as IV nutrition is charged for separately - unless the hospital is being paid by the DRG which is a flat rate, or by the day modified by the DRG. SO many hospitals are no longer charging for supplies etc - this is considered part of the cost of care. That would also include inhouse lactation consultants. Same thing applies to equipment like breast pumps, IV pumps, etc. Sometimes you will see on an itemized bill that these are listed separately, but in reality, the reimbursement is according to the contract with the insurance company. Self-pay patients may also negotiate for the price. That's why there's no separate cpt code for donor milk. Or formula.

Subject: Donor human milk

For all of the hospitals that are on this list and providing donor human milk I have a billing question.

Is there a CPT code that you are aware of that has been successful with billing?

If you are charging patients through your billing department how are you doing this and is it successful in recouping the cost of the milk the hospital has purchased from a milk bank?

Thank you
