I want to affirm Tina's statements about the competence of infants, and
teaching moms to go with baby's lead for latch.

The error that many new moms make when trying to latch their babies is
that they hold the baby too far away from the breast. And then they
center the baby's lips over the nipple.

If baby is snuggled in close to mom and placed so that baby's philtrum
is near the nipple, and mom is encouraged to wait until the baby gapes,
extends his head to get the upper lip past the nipple, and starts to
root; she can then just snuggle him in closer by pressing his shoulders
and back with her arm.

I too find that I need to do much less suck training and other
interventions since I've learned to get mom to bring baby close, set up
for an asymmetrical latch, and let the baby lead.
