Elaine,
Several different problems may cause unusual friability of the skin.
Yeast overgrowth (candidiasis) is probably the most common one.  Is this
unusual skin delicacy confined to the nipples, or is other body skin
affected too?  If it is confined to the nipples, then an infectious or
mechanical process is probably to blame.  If her skin is prone to
breakage elsewhere, she might have a connective tissue disorder.
