I always think of tantrums as a reaction to powerlessness:  children (and
sometimes adults) "lash out irrationally" because they know they have no
truly effective tools and no genuine power.  And tantrums rarely occur in
settings where the tantrum-thrower feels at risk.

Could the flames, the venting, the doctor-bashing that occasionally break
out on lactnet actually be *tantrums*, pure and simple, because we so often
feel helpless and because we feel safe here?  If so, perhaps other
lactnetters can do what the experienced parent does:  calmly wait for the
tantrum to pass, offering reassurance rather than lashing right back...
