Mira, I was under the impression that it is ok for infants to have bowel
movements once in 10-11 days after they reach a certain age (4 months) and
are exclusively breastfeeding. But not in a 16 day old babe who has not
regained her birthweight, since bowel movements along with weight gain are a
reflection of adequate caloric intake. It is too bad this nurse was not able
to assess such things as letting down, proper latch on and suck/swallow, etc
and recommend a SNS possibly, but it sounds like you reacted appropiately in
my opinion. Lisa Mooney, RN, BSN , CLE (sitting the IBCLC exam in July)
