responding to laurie wheeler's post. I am a non RN IBCLC who must comment
on a few things. I have worked my butt off to be an IBCLC, because I didn't
have the automatic 'in" that an RN has. I've paid all my own fees, my own
insurance etc, and I'm a divorced. single mom of 2. I am USED TO getting a
good salary as I have a master's degree in education and taught for 10 years.
I am highly educated. I am in private practice and even with 17 years
experience CANNOT be employed in my city because I am not an RN. I don't
want to be an RN. being an RN has NOTHING to do with being a good LC.
You should hear the stories I've heard when I see the mom after the RN/IBCLC
in the hospital. I'm not saying that RN's are worse than non RN's or anything
like that! But I have seen that many, many LC's who are privileged to work on
a salaried basis get to the point after a while that they just show up. If I
don't do an excellent job with each of my clients, they will tell their Drs. and I
will no longer be able to pay the mortgage. I know I have privileges they
don't have. They often have minutes to spend with a patient. I have as
much time as necessary to take care of the problem. Yes, I rarely get my
services reimbursed by insurance, but let's change that instead of just
hanging in there with the status quo. the status quo isn't working! thank you
all for all you do in the hospitals. I know most of you are working hard to
make changes in hospitals, with nurses, drs, etc and I know it must be very
frustrating. But just because you're an RN does not make you uniquely
qualified to be IBCLC. In fact i think sometimes it gets in the way.
